Hugh attended art courses initially at Putney School of Art and, some years later, at Central St. Martin’s. Throughout this time he combined his painting with a legal career.

He works exclusively in oil on canvas in his studio in West London. In his paintings he uses texture, colour and contrast to emphasise and delineate bulk and space. He has painted images of many cities including New York, Venice, Istanbul and London. His landscape paintings depict scenes from West Dorset and its Jurassic coast, Cornwall and Scotland.
